Trombonist Benjamin Anderson has forged a diverse path through to his spot at the cutting edge of contemporary classical practice. He is one half of Melbourne-based new music ensemble Ossicle Duo, alongside percussionist and co-founder Hamish Upton. Benjamin’s fresh and sophisticated approach to the performance of orchestral repertoire has made him in demand with orchestras throughout Australasia, leading to his current role as Principal Bass Trombonist with Orchestra Victoria. Benjamin’s contemporary artistic practice centres on innovation and exploration of sound, and he has given solo recitals in Melbourne, New York and at the Darmstadt Summer Course for New Music. He has performed with ELISION, Arcko Symphonic Ensemble, and is a regular feature at the New Music Studio at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. Collaborative at heart, he has developed new solo works with various Australian composers. As part of Ossicle Duo, he premiered proto-instrumental opera ‘GRIT’ by James Hullick in 2018, and is currently developing new works with Liam Flenady, James Gardner, Jaslyn Robertson, and Matt Laing. In his spare time Benjamin enjoys modernist cooking, philosophy podcasts, and loud suit jackets.
